Boland Samuel redentorista

Padre Samuel Joseph Boland (1922 – 2011) – Australia.

Con tristezza, e condividendo la sua fede nel compimento della Resurrezione del Signore, noi annunciamo la morte di uno dei nostri ex collaboratori dell’Istituto Storico redentorista, Padre Sam Boland, avvenuta il 4 febbraio 2011.

Padre Kevin O’Shea, C.Ss.R., che ha tenuto l’omelia al suo funerale, ci ha ricordato che Padre Boland era sacerdote da 64 anni e due giorni prima aveva celebrato il suo settantesimo anniversario come redentorista. O’Shea ha ricordato che egli era uno storico, storico della Chiesa, uno specialista in storia moderna della Chiesa, un esperto di storia Redentorista e una biblioteca vivente di informazioni sugli inizi dei Redentoristi australiani.

Nato il 10 febbraio 1922 a Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Sam era il quarto figlio di William e Edith (Frisby) Boland, entrambi già deceduti. Dei suoi fratelli rimane solo sua sorella, Suor Norah Boland, delle Suore della Misericordia; gli altri, Marie, Bill, Peggy, e Padre Tom Boland hanno tutti preceduto Padre Sam nell’eternità. (Per inciso, Padre Tom dell’Arcidiocesi di Brisbane, è stato anche un noto storico).
Da giovane Sam entra nel noviziato Redentorista nel 1940 e ha fatto la sua prima professione il 2 febbraio 1941. Nel 1946, quasi alla fine dei suoi studi nel Seminario Redentorista di Ballarat, Victoria, e prossimo alla sua ordinazione sacerdotale, riceve la notizia della tragica morte della madre in un incidente d’auto. Un contemporaneo descrive il suo ritorno dal funerale di sua madre come «rotto, con i capelli ingrigiti improvvisamente, e ipersensibile».
A metà del 1948, il giovane padre Boland è inviato al seminario di Ballarat per insegnare Sacra Scrittura. Egli scherzava che il suo insegnamento doveva durare «per due anni… ma i due anni si conclusero 40 anni dopo».
Il conseguimento del Dottorato in Storia della Chiesa cominciò quando lui aveva già trentacinque anni. Il dottorato fu portato a termine in Roma nel 1950 presso l’Università Gregoriana dei Gesuiti. Poi è tornato in Australia per insegnare nella casa di studi redentorista a Ballarat.
Nel corso degli anni il suo ministero di insegnamento lo portò anche alla Yarra Theological Union a Melbourne, a Davao nelle Filippine, e al Seminario di St. Paul in Sydney.
Nel 1979 è di nuovo a Roma, come membro dell’Istituto Storico redentorista. Questa partecipazione durerà fino al 1991 e produrrà molti articoli e recensioni per la pubblicazione dell’Istituto, Spicilegium Historicum, e per numerosi altri bollettini storici e pubblicazioni. Inoltre nel 1982 ha pubblicato “Faith of our Fathers”, la storia centenaria della presenza Redentorista in Australia, 1882-1982.

Nel 1986-1987 Boland ha prodotto la sua opera più importante, il “Dictionary of the Redemptorists” di 440 pagine. Questo volume  presenta piccole storie caratteristiche di personaggi redentoristi, luoghi ed eventi. Mons. Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Superiore Generale Redentorista fino al 2009, ha lodato Boland «… come storico consacrato e vero confratello », e poi ha aggiunto:« Mi servivo del suo Dizionario almeno una volta alla settimana».
Dopo il suo ritorno in Australia nel 1991, Sam restò ancora collaboratore dello Spicilegium romano, fornendo regolarmente lunghi articoli a questo bollettino professionale, e per altri simili bollettini in Australia.

Eppure, c’era un altro lato di Padre Sam Boland, come ha ricordato Padre O’Shea a coloro che si erano riuniti a Brisbane per salutarlo e celebrare la sua vita. Ha detto O’Shea: «Sam ha fatto tutto col sogno di farlo da Redentorista. È stato missionario, soprattutto nelle missioni italiane nel nord del Queensland. Ha spesso aiutato nelle parrocchie, soprattutto nel Western Victoria. Per due volte fu Rettore a Ballarat di una grande comunità locale di quasi un centinaio di professi …  un rettore sempre calmo, equilibrato…  Nella sua vita… Faceva ogni cosa per renderci tutti un po’ più “buona notizia” per la gente meno credente, e lui ci ha mostrato quanto un’ azione  intelligente ed autentica possa raggiungere queste persone e portar loro speranza e gioia più di quanto si possa immaginare».

Da anziano, Padre Boland ha accettato il fatto che le sue facoltà andavano indebolendosi. Ha chiesto di andare nella  Emmaus House, centro di cura a Brisbane dove si è celebrata la sua messa funebre. Andare a Emmaus House è stato un grande passo per lui, perché mai prima aveva vissuto per un certo tempo al di fuori di una casa redentorista:  «La Congregazione era tutto per lui»( Padre O’Shea).

Quando a Roma è stata annunciata la morte del padre Boland, un confratello italiano che lo conosceva bene, ha detto spontaneamente: «Che Uomo e che Sacerdote! Genuino e gentile ».

Noi Redentoristi possiamo esprimere solo gratitudine a Dio per il suo esempio e la sua presenza in mezzo a noi.
